As part of FAO's Regional Priorities, Regional Priority Two (RP2) covering climate action, biodiversity and natural resources management (NRM) helps Members protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, combatting climate change while realizing more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems through a range of collaborations:
- Strengthened networks and partnerships;
- Upgraded capabilities in soil and water management;
- Deployment of climate-smart technologies and approaches; and
- Effective land management for sustainable development.
Taking action now to anticipate and adapt will have lasting benefits for the Asia and the Pacific region. These efforts must be carried out leaving no one behind and ensuring the inclusivity of marginalized and vulnerable peoples, such as Indigenous Peoples, youth and women.
Agrifood systems in Asia and the Pacific at risk from climate change
Changes in average growing season conditions and risks from climate-related extremes in the region impact the productivity of agrifood systems and the ability of countries to eliminate hunger. Biodiversity loss and water stress and scarcity have reduced resilience to shocks while increasing pollution and resource degradation.
Building sustainable and resilient agrifood systems
Integrated approaches result in climate-smart agriculture, strengthening resilience to climate risks.
Integrated water resources management can sustain land management, maintaining soil fertility and health. Securing land tenure allows rural populations to implement climate-smart agriculture while remaining on their land.
Supporting climate action, biodiversity and natural resources management
Our work aims to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including integrated water resources management. Addressing the drivers of future risks from climate change — such as agro-ecosystem degradation, reduced resilience and adaptive capacities, and excess greenhouse gas emissions — will have lasting benefits for the region.
Our focus in Asia and the Pacific:

Climate change and disaster risk reduction

Land governance and tenure

Soil management

Water management
FAO in action
In Asia and the Pacific, we work on climate action, biodiversity and natural resources management by employing the following techniques and practices:
- Strengthened networks and partnerships;
- Deployment of climate-smart technologies;
- Effective soil and water management;
- Secure governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forests;
- Anticipatory action for disaster risk management; and
- Innovative financing with public and private resources.
Natural resource management supporting agrifood systems is a significant challenge for the Asia and the Pacific region. Changes in growing season conditions and increased risks from climate extremes are already
impacting agrifood systems.
