FAO and Morocco collaborate to tackle methane emissions

FAO, in collaboration with Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, will hold an inception meeting for the project “Foster Methane Mitigation in the Agriculture and Livestock sectors” (UNUN/INT/1108/UEP) on 4-5 February 2025, in Rabat, Morocco. This project, supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) of the United Nations Environment Programme, aims to strengthen Morocco’s climate action by reducing methane emissions from livestock supply chains, focusing on the dairy and red meat value chains. Aligned with Morocco’s “Generation Green 2020-2030” strategy and commitments under the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and Global Methane Pledge, the project seeks to enhance the sustainability of livestock development, improve rural livelihoods, and help Morocco achieve its NDC targets through tailored methane mitigation measures.

Focus of the launch event

The event will gather approximately 60 participants, representing a wide range of public and private entities, academia, producer organizations, financial institutions, and other stakeholders. It aims to refine the annual action plan and agree on the role of the different stakeholders during the project implementation. This two-day meeting will serve as a platform for key stakeholders, to:

  • Discuss the project’s goals, priority actions, and expected outcomes.
  • Exchange insights on methane emissions from livestock and agriculture.
  • Develop strategies for aligning the project with Morocco’s climate and livestock policies.

The meeting will establish a collaborative framework to drive Morocco's methane mitigation efforts, as well as an enhanced coordination among participants to develop a methane inventory and capacity-building activities tailored to Morocco's agricultural landscape. It will also ensure alignment with national development objectives.

Setting the path for sustainable development

This inception meeting marks a significant step in Morocco’s journey toward sustainable livestock practices and enhanced climate resilience. By fostering collaboration across sectors and identifying actionable solutions, the project will enable Morocco to align its livestock sector with climate goals, while supporting the livelihoods of rural communities. This initiative highlights Morocco’s leadership in addressing methane emissions and strengthening the sustainability of the livestock sector.
