FAO launches new activity book for kids on livestock and climate change as part of COP29 efforts
This new educational tool aims to teach children and pre-teens about livestock and its environmental impact

In support of the upcoming 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a new activity book designed to educate children and pre-teens on the role of livestock in human communities and their impact on the environment. Tailored to young readers, this publication explores how livestock supports communities worldwide, from mountainous regions to arid landscapes, and the complex environmental issues surrounding modern animal farming.
The book addresses fundamental questions, explaining how livestock operates and exploring its environmental impact, including significant contributions to greenhouse gas emissions. It also sheds light on the challenges farmers and herders face, especially as climate change affects livestock and farming practices. Through this book, children learn that livestock animals are both contributors to climate change through enteric fermentation, and victims of climate shifts, as changing weather patterns threaten their health.
With vibrant illustrations, hands-on activities, and age-appropriate language, this FAO’s activity book transforms environmental science and agricultural concepts into accessible, enjoyable lessons. It aims to foster environmental awareness among young people, encouraging them to think critically about the relationships between animals, humans, and the planet. FAO hopes the book will inspire the next generation to consider how they can positively impact climate and environmental solutions.
Released in conjunction with COP29, the activity book underscores FAO’s commitment to educating future generations about the interconnections between livestock and climate change. As global leaders gather to address the climate crisis, FAO’s initiative aims to make these essential topics understandable and relevant to children and young people, helping build a more sustainable and informed future.
The new activity book is now available for parents, educators, and young readers eager to learn more about livestock and environmental sustainability.
