FAO, in collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and the Ministry of Environment (MoE), will host the official launch event of the project “Fostering methane mitigation in the agriculture and livestock sectors” (UNUN/INT/1108/UEP) from 18 to 20 February 2025, in Nyamata, Rwanda.
Supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) of the United Nations Environment Programme, the project aims to develop a methane reduction strategy and formulate a funding proposal on biodigester to reduce methane emissions from livestock. The project aligns with Rwanda’s Vision 2050, the second national strategy for transformation and the fifth strategic plan for agriculture transformation.
The new project will enhance the sustainability of livestock development, improve rural livelihoods, and help Rwanda achieve its livestock-related climate commitments outlined in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) in line with the Global Methane Pledge. It will ensure broad stakeholder engagement, including livestock farmers and producer organizations, government institutions, development partners, and financial institutions across the country.
The launch event
On 18 February, an official launch event will gather around 50 key stakeholders from Rwanda’s government, private sector, research institutions, financial organizations, and development partners. Through this multi-stakeholder engagement, the event will showcase a structured approach to methane mitigation, ensuring alignment with national policies while fostering innovation, capacity-building, and knowledge-sharing.
Setting pathways for sustainable development
This project represents a critical step in Rwanda’s efforts to promote sustainable livestock practices, enhance productivity and climate resilience. By fostering collaboration across sectors and identifying actionable solutions, the project will enable Rwanda to align its livestock sector with global climate goals while supporting the livelihoods of rural communities. This project underscores Rwanda’s leadership in addressing methane emissions and advancing sustainable and climate-smart practices.
