In September 2024, all three FAO price indices tracking the developments of the components of the oilcrops complex appreciated month-on-month. While both oilseed and oilmeal indices still stood below their respective year-earlier levels, the vegetable oil index increased to its highest level since early 2023.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the imbalances in bargaining power between suppliers and buyers of agricultural and food products, already a concern before the pandemic, were amplified further. Rapidly rising production costs have led to appeals by producers for these higher costs to be reflected in prices paid to them.

According to FAO’s 2021 report "Assessment of Agricultural Plastics and Their Sustainability: A Call for Action", the use of plastics in agriculture has seen a dramatic increase since the 1950s and is expected to continue rising in the foreseeable future. Bananas, as the most consumed and traded fruit globally, heavily depend on plastic use at virtually every stage of the value chain.

The Fourth Global Conference of the World Banana Forum (WBF) took place at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, on 12 and 13 March 2024. Moreover, the following three side-events were held: the Third International Meeting on Gender Equity in the Banana Industry on March 11, the Event on Fusarium Wilt TR4 and the Future of the Banana Industry on 11 March and the Global Conference on Living Wages and Living Income in the Banana Industry on 14 March.

In August 2024, the FAO price indices for oilseeds and oilmeals continued to decline month-on-month, whereas the vegetable oil index increased for the third consecutive month. While both oilseed and oilmeal indices remained markedly below their corresponding levels of a year ago, the vegetable oil index firmed to 8.1 percent above its August 2023 reading.

Global wheat prices decreased in August 2024, mostly reflecting weak international demand and larger production estimates in some major exporters. Regarding maize, concerns about crop conditions and prospects of tighter export supply contributed to slightly firmer international prices.

Assisting developing countries in implementing current trade agreements and in preparing for trade negotiations is a core activity of FAO. Support to the implementation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Uruguay Round Agreements and to the negotiations on agriculture under the Doha Round have been prominent activities in this area. This expert meeting is intended to explore issues around the relationship between trade and nutrition. It will address the role of trade in the “nutrition transition” and the extent to which trade and trade policies can be either detrimental to, or supportive of improved nutrition.
