The Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) is organizing a Glacier Day event on 21 March 2025 at MMM Firmian to mark the official launch of the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation 2025. The event will highlight the importance of glaciers and their conservation through a series of expert discussions, artistic installations and film screenings.
The programme includes a vernissage and press conference for the temporary exhibition "Himalaya" by photographer Thomas Biasotto, featuring striking images of the Himalayas, some printed on glacier fabric. The exhibition will be open from 16 March to 9 November 2025. There will also be a symposium in German to discuss the future of glaciers with distinguished experts, including Georg Kaser, Felix Keller and Chris Luebkeman.
A new sound installation will be introduced in the summer of 2025 at MMM Ortles and MMM Firmian, allowing visitors to hear real-time sounds from the Solda Glacier, captured through an embedded microphone. In addition, from 19 March 2025, excerpts from the film "Requiem in Weiss" will be screened at MMM cinemas and selected theatres. The MMM Firmian collection will also feature "Am Gletscher", a contemporary artwork by Ondrej Drescher.
