The main outcome of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022 was the declaration of 2023–2027 as Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions.
Activities planned for the period aim to enhance the international community's awareness of issues affecting mountain countries and to give new impetus to efforts aimed at addressing their challenges. Proclamation of the Five Years of Action was proposed by the Government of Kyrgyzstan; it was included in the final draft of the triennial resolution on sustainable mountain development, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly on 22 November 2022 and co-sponsored by 110 governments.
In December 2023, during the 174th session of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Council recognized and reaffirmed the leading role of FAO as main agency for sustainable mountain development within the United Nations (UN) system and it requested FAO to develop a Five Years of Action Plan to support the implementation of the 2023–2027 as Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions. The Global Action Plan on Mountain Regions’ Development was subsequently produced and published in July 2024.
The Mountain Partnership Secretariat is coordinating a task force and working group that have been established to define a global action plan for the Five Years of Action. The following list includes summary reports of the meetings of the task force and working group. The Task Force is composed by over 25 intergovernmental organizations, including 15 different UN Agencies.
