Hybrid Event, 29/05/2025
Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at FAO, this Forum will address the impacts of glacier retreat on agriculture, food security and rural livelihoods in mountain regions.
With over 50 percent of glaciers in Central Asia at risk of disappearing by 2050, the session will explore nature-based and inclusive solutions to strengthen resilience in glacier-dependent agri-food systems. Discussions will focus on sustainable water and land management, climate-smart agriculture, and enhanced regional cooperation.
Key themes:
Climate- and water-smart agriculture in mountain areas
Synergies between glacier preservation and sustainable food systems
Contributions of youth and Indigenous knowledge to resilience and development
Preventing instability and conflict linked to glacier melt
This Forum contributes to the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025, the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034), and global frameworks including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Draft programme highlights:
High-level panel on resilience in glacier and mountain ecosystems
Technical session on integrated food, water and land solutions (FAO, WFP, Mountain Partnership)
Partner round table on collaboration and innovation (ADB, WB, WHH, OSCE, WMO, UNESCO)
