From 16 to 18 May 2025, the Government of Nepal will host the inaugural edition of Sagarmatha Sambaad, a high-level global dialogue on the theme "Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity" Held in Kathmandu, the event reflects Nepal’s commitment to strengthening multilateral dialogue on global challenges in the context of climate action and sustainable development.
Named after Mount Everest (Sagarmatha in Nepali)—the world’s highest peak and a symbol of shared global heritage—Sagarmatha Sambaad is a biennial, multi-stakeholder forum that brings together heads of state and government, policymakers, scientists, youth, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, private sector leaders and media representatives to deliberate on issues of planetary importance.
The 2025 edition takes place during the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, reinforcing global efforts to raise awareness about the accelerating impacts of climate change on the cryosphere. The dialogue will highlight the importance of mountain ecosystems as climate regulators, sources of freshwater and culturally significant landscapes.
The programme will include thematic plenaries and parallel sessions addressing topics such as glacier preservation and the 1.5-degree target, nature-based solutions, food security, sustainable mountain economies, gender equity, intergenerational justice and regional cooperation. A dedicated children and youth dialogue, BaYu Sambaad, will be held on 26 April 2025, amplifying the voices of young people from across Nepal.
With the Himalayas as a backdrop, Sagarmatha Sambaad aims to build global solidarity, inspire collective action and contribute to inclusive, climate-resilient development.
