Bonn (Germany), 19/06/2025
Organized within the Mountain Partnership framework, this side event will take place during the 62nd Session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 62) at the Berlin Room in Bonn, Germany from 15.00 to 16.15 CEST. The session will bring together governments, international organizations and regional actors to scale up climate action for mountains and further integrate mountain-specific challenges and solutions into the UNFCCC and the broader Rio Convention processes.
Despite covering around a quarter of the Earth’s land surface and serving as critical sources of freshwater for over two billion people, mountain ecosystems remain largely underrepresented in global climate frameworks. With rising climate risks—glacial retreat, extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity—mountain communities and ecosystems require targeted support and recognition.
This event builds on the outcomes of major regional and international mountain dialogues held in 2025, aiming to strengthen political alliances, enhance international cooperation, and embed mountain issues into global climate policies, including adaptation and mitigation finance mechanisms.
