The evolution of mountaineering in the recent decade has been considerable. The competitive nature of the activity is exacerbated by the media coverage of sporting achievements, the addition of technical devices like global positioning systems (GPS) and the merchandising of mountains.
Mountain Partnership member Mountain Wilderness began to question the choices of mountain practitioners when faced with these developments. Mountain Wilderness Spain published a paper that shows that a modern approach to mountain areas should not only respect the natural environment but also rely on an ethical foundation to the relationship between humans and mountains.
