Glaciers are melting faster than ever—and we need your help to capture what is at stake.
To mark International Mountain Day on 11 December 2025, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat has launched a global photo contest to highlight the vital role glaciers play in sustaining life in mountain regions and beyond. This year’s theme, “Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond” underscores their critical importance to both people and the planet.
Glaciers store nearly 70 percent of the Earth’s freshwater and are essential for agriculture, biodiversity, tourism and livelihoods. They also hold deep cultural and spiritual meaning for mountain communities. But as climate change accelerates, glaciers are retreating at an alarming pace.
The photo contest invites mountain lovers, photographers and advocates around the world to submit up to three original images that show why glaciers matter—whether it's glacier-fed rivers supporting farming, the visible impacts of warming on ice and snow or local traditions and efforts to protect these frozen giants.
The winning photo will be featured on FAO and Mountain Partnership social media, and the winner will receive an action camera.
