Reflections of a youth observer on the Expert Dialogue on Mountains and Climate Change

In May 2024, Rocío Melina García, a forest engineer and doctoral fellow with the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina, was invited to observe the expert dialogue on mountains and climate change. The dialogue was held within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the 60th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) on 5 June in Bonn, Germany and brought together governments and experts from around the world. As a founding member of the Mountain Partnership’s Mountain Youth Hub, Rocío shares her reflections and insights from this transformative experience.

Initial impressions

Participating in the expert dialogue on mountains and climate change was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. The event felt like a different world compared to the typical scientific conferences I had attended before. Witnessing delegations from various countries, esteemed research panels like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and professionals from the UNFCCC was particularly fascinating.

The interactions I had with other delegates were profoundly enlightening. It enriched my perspective and underscored the interdisciplinary nature of addressing climate change. Observing the interventions from various countries and their key points of emphasis provided a unique insight into global perspectives on climate change. Engaging in dialogues with experts to request research highlighted the critical alignment of scientific inquiry with societal needs. For a young researcher like myself, it was invaluable to witness the convergence of science and politics and to understand how they can collaborate for societal well-being.

While the event was predominantly positive, some aspects were concerning. The urgency for immediate action to protect mountain regions was a common theme, and regional breakout groups facilitated concrete solution discussions, especially with Latin American representatives. However, the gap between available information and political action was evident. Political negotiations are often slow due to conflicting interests, and the planet cannot afford to wait.

Career impact

This experience has been transformative for my career. Having recently submitted my doctoral thesis and currently drafting my postdoctoral proposal, I will carry with me the insights I gained from this opportunity. My postdoctoral project focuses on governance types in mountain forest areas and the impact of international decisions at the territorial level. Attending this event has enriched my understanding and shaped my research direction. Additionally, being a part of the Mountain Youth Hub has expanded my interests beyond science, highlighting the potential of integrating science, policy and international relations in my career.

Young people are crucial participants in these kinds of events. We are the generation that will face the severe consequences of today’s environmental decisions. Our activist energy and creativity are essential, and it is vital to train and encourage young people to take on decision-making roles. The Mountain Youth Hub is a crucial space for this. As a network, we can amplify diverse concerns and ensure active participation from young people worldwide, shaping a future where we are key players in decision-making processes.

The power of visibility and mentorship

A memorable anecdote that encapsulates my experience occurred on my way back from the event. A young man, noticing my badge and attire, approached me on the subway, eager to learn how I attended the event. I spent the journey explaining the process and answering his questions. This interaction emphasized the importance of visibility and mentorship. Young people need to see themselves reflected in their peers and realize the potential they possess. Often, we limit ourselves, but with the right support and opportunities, we can achieve significant impact.

In conclusion, participating in the expert dialogue on mountains and climate change has been a profound experience. It underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, immediate action, and youth involvement in shaping a sustainable future. As a young professional, I am inspired and committed to contributing to this global effort, integrating science, governance, and activism in my future endeavours.
