Beeswax Balms are handmade therapeutic balms that can be used to cure a sore throat, a cold, joint pain, moisturizer, cracked feet or used as solid perfume or insect repellent. It is a natural wax produced by Wild Rock Bees (Apis dorsata) and sourced by honey hunters from their hives of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Hives are marked so that others do not collect from the same hives, ensuring sustainability to the harvesting process.
Tradition and innovation
The balms are made of natural wax produced by Wild rock bees. Initially the beeswax was considered a by-product of honey collection and usually discarded. Only recently was it is collected and used to make value added products with natural moisturizing properties.
Each balm is blended with other natural flavours and oils, equally mixed with the beeswax, melted and poured for solidification to add to the health benefit of the balm. Natural flavours range from jasmine to sandal wood, evocative, powerful, highly fragrant and long used for ceremonial purposes.
Producers
Aadhimalai Producer Company is a company wholly owned by Indigenous Peoples, one of the first of its kind in India. Beeswax balm production centers are situated in the mountain ranges are run entirely by 24 women, who are experts and pioneers in the art of making beeswax balms. The company collaborates with Last Forest, a sustainable marketplace that provides eco-friendly, thoughtful and meaningful options directly involving the Indigenous Peoples of more than 150 villages.
Territory and health
The beeswax balms are produced and processed at an altitude of 1 500 metres above sea level. This is above the mountain areas of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected forest area in India and part of the mountain range Western Ghats. They provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, have non-allergenic properties, and protect the skin from various airborne allergies.
