Con solo el 6 % de las tierras agrícolas del mundo, Asia Meridional acoge a una cuarta parte de la población mundial. Aquí, la ganadería es una de las principales actividades económicas y representa alrededor del 30 % del PIB agrícola regional. La región posee casi el 20 % de las existencias mundiales de ganado vacuno y produce el 14 % de la producción mundial de leche de vaca. La leche representa alrededor del 80 % del suministro total de alimentos de origen animal y contribuye al 5 y al 14 % de la ingesta diaria total de calorías y proteínas, respectivamente. La ganadería lechera puede proporcionar rendimientos regulares a los agricultores, mejorar la nutrición y la seguridad alimentaria de los hogares y crear empleo fuera de la explotación para los millones de pequeños productores de la región.
